Abstract

787,521. Transferring freight containers to and from vehicles; hydraulic jacks. MARINI, L. March 28, 1955 [March 26, 1954; Oct. 12, 1954], No. 8999/55. Classes 78 (3) and 78 (4). A freight container is transferred between rail and road vehicles by hydraulic jacks E, Fig. 4, adjacent a portion of track to which the road vehicle may be drawn by a rail trolley C which, in the construction illustrated, is drawn by a cable 26 from a winch 25. Each jack E carries an arm 17 which can be turned to the position shown in broken lines in Fig. 4 to engage beneath the flange of the side sill 7, Fig. 2, to support the body. The jacks may be operated from a hand pump 18 and an indicator 20 is adapted to register with an index 26, Fig. 2, on the vehicle to indicate when the vehicle is in the proper position. The finger 17 may be omitted and the jacks joined in pairs by means guided by fixed uprights which may carry racks engaged by pinions at opposite ends of a shaft joining each pair of jacks so that the jacks must move in unison. The body shown in Fig. 2 is located on the chassis by its side sills 7 and by heads 8 carrying capstan bolts 9 for locking the body in position. The body may alternatively carry tapered vertical studs secured by nuts in tapered sockets on the chassis or may be located by engagement of serrated members on its underside.with corresponding members on the chassis. An alternative body construction is shown in Fig. 3. The jacks shown in Fig. 13 carry a rigid or flexible dust excluding shield 43<SP>11</SP> which cooperates with graduations on the cylinder of the jack to indicate the extent by which the jack is extended.
