Pairs of helical gears of the type described in Specifications 656,136 and 656,169 are made to operate near the limit between reversibility and irreversibility by selecting the tooth parameters to cause, when a drive back from the driven to the driving gear is attempted, the resultant of the force exerted between contacting teeth and of the frictional force due to the sliding to pass through the axis of the driving gear.
