Abstract

781,573. Articulated railway vehicles. PATENTES TALGO SOC. ANON. Jan. 18, 1954 [Jan. 28,1953], No. 1428/54. Class 103(6) A railway train includes two cars connected by a single vertical pivot C1, a twowheeled running gear for each car located close to its pivoted end and mounted for lateral displacement so that the cars can enter a curve without disrupting the pivotal connection between them and steering mechanism for the running gear of each car detachably connected to the other car. Each running gear consists of a drop centre dead axle 12 having at its ends spindles on which the wheels 14 are mounted. The axle carries the weight of one end portion of the car by a spring suspension consisting of substantially vertical spring struts 15 with universal joints at the ends. Lateral displacement of each axle is controlled by a centering device which includes a torsion rod 17a secured to the car body and having a depending arm 17b attached to the axle by a link 17c. The lateral displacement is limited by stops 17d. The steering mechanism for each axle comprises radius rods 20, 21a, the rod 20 being pivoted to the car body at the point D and the other radius rod 21a being connected at one end to a point B on the axle and at the other end having a pivotal connection 30 with a steering rod 21b which is pivoted to the and of the adjacent car body at the point E. The rod 21b is extended beyond the connection 30 and has a pin and slot connection 35, 39 with the car body. In order that the cars may pass around curves without severing the pivotal connection C1, the distance of the axle from the connection should be as small as possible. A suitable arrangement may be derived from the fomula m<SP>2</SP> +ml = 8 sq. metres approx. where m is the disance of the axle from the pivotal connection C1 and 1 is the distance between the two axles of a car. To facilitate uncoupling of two cars 10, 11 each steering rod 21b may be formed of two detachable parts 40, 41, the part 41, which is connected at E to the car 11, being detached from the part. 40 which is then rigidly connected by a bolt 49 to a bracket 50 on the car 11 so as to lock the axle.
