Class 64(2) [Also in Group XXIX] In a temperature-responsive element of the kind wherein a tube 5, heated at one side distorts and bends laterally, the tube has a slot or slots 18 to reduce the conduction of heat transversely of the tube from its heated side. As shown, a rod 15 secured at one end to the slotted end of the tube 5 extends from its open end to operate, by means of a stem 14, a spring- loaded valve 10 in a main gas pipe 7 on which the tube 5 is secured by a bracket 6. A pilot gas jet 17, which might be moved around the tube 5 to vary the direction of the rod movement, is mounted to heat the side of the tube adjacent the pipe 7.
