As shown in Fig. 2, a leather buffing machine is made up of a buffing roll 1, a feed roll 2 having a resilient and deformable outer surface, and a feed table 8 which has an extension 9 following the curvature of roll 2. The static platen of the invention 5, consists of a blade terminating in a chamfered trailing edge 7 between the rolls 1 and 2, supported on a rod 3. The leather 10, fed between the lower surface of the static platen and the table extension 9 is forced against the feed roll by the platen 5 which is preferably curved on a radius slightly greater than that of roll 2 and centered at a point along the plane of the axes of rolls 1 and 2 to the right of roll 2, thereby forming a tapering throat between the platen 5 and the roll 2. The leather leaving the trailing edge 7 is thereby flexed as shown. The underside of the platen may be provided with diverging grooves as shown in Fig. 4 to spread the hide out on the feed roll or alternatively the platen 5 may be made up of a series of spring teeth 13 (Fig. 5) suitably divergent as shown and supported on and secured to a rod 12. As a further alternative the static platen may consist of a vertical plate mounted above the point of contact of the work and feed roll. or equivalent, the extension 9 of the table 8 in this case being extended around the feed roll 2 for almost 90 degrees.
