A closure 16, Fig. 1, for, for example, the high-pressure heat exchanger described in Specification 639,902, is retained within an annular wall 10 by the engagement of a shear key element 18, in the form of a split or segmental ring, with a groove 10a in said wall, and fluid tightness is effected by a channelshaped soft metal, &c. gasket 24 which is located in the groove 10a to embrace a projecting portion 18a of the element 18 and extends from the groove at 24a to lie between an outer face 16c of the cover and the opposed face of the key portion 18a. As shown, the end 24b of the gasket 24 preferably extends along the load-resisting surface 10c of the wall 10. The key element 18 is secured in position by a ring 20 which is interposed between the projecting outer end 16a of the cover and the element and is retained in place by keepers 22. In a modification, Fig. 5, a split key ring 138 and gasket 140 are retained in the annular channel 136 of a wall 134 by a solid ring 142 bolted to the cover 132. The key element may be provided with hardened ring inserts adjacent the terminal sealing surfaces of the soft metal gasket in which case the opposed seating surfaces 10c, 16c are preferably serrated.
