Abstract

768,713. Piston packing. BOWERMAN, H. E. July 23, 1954, No. 21550/54. Class 122 (1). A piston packing arrangement comprises a sealing member 16 of resilient material recessed at one end to form two lips 17, 18 and bonded to a metal sleeve 10 having a radial flange 15, and a sealing ring 12 of resilient material bonded to the side of the flange opposite the sealing member and adapted to engage a web 6 on the piston 5. The sealing member and the sealing ring are of natural or synthetic rubber and the ring engages in a groove 11 in the web 6 and is partially embedded in a groove 20 in the flange 15 which is made of soft metal, such as brass, and has a raised portion 13 at its periphery. The pacliing is axially positioned by a spring ring 9 and, as shown, two packings are mounted on the piston so as to act in opposite directions. In a modification, the base portion is of harder rubber than the recessed upper portion and the two portions are bonded together along a conical surface extending from near the flange 15 radially outwards towards the recessed end.
