Abstract
768,476. Spring wheels. APPEL, W. D. March 7, 1955 [March 22, 1954], No. 6671/55. Class 144 (1). In a spring wheel wherein the peripheral edge 19 of the wheel body or web 11 is received between a pair of radially inwardly directed, laterally spaced annular rim flanges 20, 20a and secured thereto by rubber or like blocks or rings 21, 21a bonded to adjacent surfaces of the edge 19 and the flanges, the flanges 20, 20a are respectively secured to the underside of relatively stepped portions of the rim 12. As shown, the flanges are riveted, after bonding to the rubber members 21, 21a, to the underside of the well base and a bead-seat flange respectively of the rim 12. Fig. 2 shows the connected portions of the web edge 19 and the flanges 20, 20a lying in radial planes parallel to the plane of rotation of the wheel, whereas in Fig. 4 the said connected portions are inclined to the radial. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement wherein the rubber blocks or rings are each laminated to include a metal insert 24, 24a, the inner peripheral edges of the laminated structures being stepped as shown. In each of the above constructions, the web 11 and the flanges 20, 20a may be segmental.
