Abstract

790,999. Tubeless-tyre wheel rims. KELSEYHAYES CO. Oct. 26, 1954 [Dec. 7, 1953], No. 30924/54. Class 144 (2). In a divisible rim for a tubeless tyre comprising an endless detachable flange 2 retained on a rim base 1 by a split ring 3 engaged in a gutter 6 of the rim base, the split ring 3 is formed of two load-transmitting rings 18, 19 having circumferentially spaced transverse splits 21, 22 and which sandwich between them an endless resilient stretchable sealing ring 20 which is secured to, but is free to move circumferentially relatively to, the split rings 18, 19 and has inner and outer peripheral portions projecting radially inwardly and outwardly beyond the inner and outer peripheries of the split rings 18, 19 so that in the assembled rim the ring 20 has airsealing engagement with the facing surfaces of the flange 2 and gutter 6. As shown, the gutter 6 has a radially outwardly extending terminal wall 11 and the flange 2 has a radially inwardly projecting rib 16, the split ring assembly 3 being clamped between the rib 16 and wall 11 in the final assembled state of the rim, Fig. 3. The under surface of the flange 2 axially outwardly of the rib 16, and the outer peripheral surfaces of the split rings 18, 19, are flared axially outwardly for mutual wedging engagement which compresses the split rings tightly on to the base 10 of the gutter 6. In the assembly of the split ring 3, the respective splits 21, 22, Fig. 5, of the rings 18, 19 are circumferentially spaced and the sealing ring 20 is bonded to the rings 18, 19 so that an unattached minor portion 20<SP>2</SP> thereof, normally under tension, bridges the gap between, and overlaps, the splits 21, 22 to permit expansion of the assembly over the gutter wall 11. Shields 23, 24 are attached respectively at one end to the rings 18, 19 to cover the splits 21, 22 and facilitate stretching of the portion 20<SP>2</SP> of the sealing ring.
