Abstract

767,373. Sheet feeding mechanism for typewriters &c. ROYAL McBEE CORPORATION. Feb. 11, 1955 [March 29, 1954], No. 4197/55. Class 100(4) A typewriter comprises a platen or work-sheet feeding cylinder A journaled on end plates 1, 2 of a carriage or support frame B, a rear work-sheet introductory-feed-roll 6, mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to that of cylinder A and spaced therefrom so that worksheet material introduced between them is gripped, and work-sheet-propelling rollers 7, 8, 9 all journaled for rotation about an axis parallel to that of cylinder A and circumferentially displaced in the direction of sheet feeding with respect to the cylinder A from the rollers 6. The relative frictional sheet feeding characteristics of the rollers 7, 8, 9 and roller 6 are such that the sheet feeding tendency of the rollers 7, 8, 9 is greater than that of the roller 6. The work-sheet material is consequently gripped with more pressure between cylinder A and roller 6 than between rollers 7, 8, 9 and the cylinder. For this purpose the roller 6 may be formed of relatively hard material such as polished aluminium, having a Rockwell B scale hardness of 66- 68, and the propelling rollers 7, 8 and 9 are of soft resilient rubber having a Durometer hardness with 40-50 and a high coefficient of friction. The roller 6 is pressed against cylinder A by springs 30, 31 acting on rear edges of arms 24, 25 in which shaft 23 of the roll is supported. This pressure may be adjusted by nuts 32 on bolts 33, 34, and may be in the range of 1“ to 1¢ lbs. The front pressure feed rollers 7, 8 and 9 are pressed against the work by separate independently adjustable mechanisms E of known kind which act on arms 59, 60, 61 and press feed rolls 7, 8, 9 against the work-sheet material between these rolls and sheet feeding cylinder A. Top or bail rolls 15 formed of the same material as the rolls 7, 8, 9 may be carried by a bail 16 pivoted on the end plates 1, 2 to assist in holding the worksheets against the cylinder A.
