767,302. Earth-excavating apparatus. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd. Jan. 12, 1955 [Jan. 13, 1954], No. 1012/54. Class 68 (1). A bucket chain-carrying boom 38 is so mounted on a platform 6, which may be a vehicle, that it may be moved in working and return strokes in planes parallel with the length of the platform. A base 7 is so mounted on the platform 6 that it may be reciprocated longitudinally thereof by jacks extending between the base and the platform or by a rotary member mounted on either the base or the platform and engaging one or more taut chains fixed to the other member. The base 7 carries a turntable 20 on which is supported about a shaft 23 on the turntable a jib 22 that may, when rotated about the axis of the turntable clear of the base, be rotated about the shaft 23 by jacks 28 disposed on either side of the boom acting on toggle levers 30, 31 extending between the inner end of the jib 22 and the turntable 20 to bring the cranked outer end 34 of the jib to a substantially horizontal position adjacent the ground. At the end 34 of the jib. is a turntable 35 on which is mounted, for regulatable movement about an axis parallel to that of the platform, a structure on which is mounted about a shaft 43 a cradle 36 to which the boom 38 is connected on either side by arm 47, cable 40 and toggle mechanism 50, 51, 52. Movement of the cradle 36 about the shaft 43 by jacks disposed between it and the structure causes the boom to be moved from a vertical operative position to a position above the turntable 35. The driving mechanisms of the turntables 20, 35 are so interconnected that for all positions of the jib the boom lies parallel to the length of the platform.
