[Also in Group XIII] In a heat exchanger, e.g. for air and hot gases (see Group XIII), Perkins tubes, extending in radial planes from a rotor which has its axis in the direction of flow of the heat-exchanging fluids, have longitudinal fins which are helically curved so as to impel one or both fluids if a motor drives the rotor. In one form, Fig. 1, the two fluids flow through passages A, B separated by a partition b which has a gap just large enough to accommodate the rotor c and its tubes d. In another form, Fig. 4, the fluid passages A, B are coaxial and separated by the cylindrical rotor g and cylindrical walls h extending above and below it. The tubes extend through the rotor into both fluids, and are either radial, as shown, or inclined downwardly and inwardly. The fins i<SP>1</SP>, j<SP>1</SP> in this form may be helically shaped to impel one gas only, as to impel both gases in the same or opposite directions. In a modification of the second form (Fig. 5, not shown) the longitudinal fins are inclined to the general direction of fluid flow, so as to form helical passages for the fluids. The fins may be of increasing width outwardly from the rotor axis, so that their edges meet along their whole length. The helical passages on the inside and outside of the rotor may be of the same or opposite hand. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 665,299, [Group XIII].
