Abstract

627,859. Heat - exchangers. FRENKEL, M. S. Sept. 17, 1946, Nos. 27901/46, 35573/46 and 4710/47. [Class 64(iii)] In a heat exchanger, e.g. an oil cooler, an engine radiator or a condenser or evaporator comprising one or more series of secondary heat-transferring vanes 2, 10, 23 connected to a primary heat transferring wall 1 and extending in the direction of flow of a heat exchange fluid past that wall, the vanes, which are each a fraction of the wall in length, are displaced relatively to one another both along the direction of fluid flow so that there is a gap 4 in that direction between successive vanes in each series, and transversely of the direction of fluid flow so that each vane is not aligned in that direction with any other vane. In one form, Fig. 2, the vanes 2 extend between the two parallel walls of a passage of elongated cross-section. In a modification, Fig. 4, the vanes 10 are parallel to the walls 1a and are supported by transverse supports 11a each attached at one end to a wall 1a. The supports 11a may be equal in length to the vanes. Partitions 12 subdivided the passage. In a third form, Fig. 8, comprising two coaxial tubes 20, 21, the vanes 23, which are radial and connect the two tubes, are arranged spirally. The vanes may be plane or curved, e.g. corrugated, and one series may include both plane and curved vanes. Individual vanes may be divided into sections by a gap. The second Provisional Specification describes a modification of the form shown in Fig. 4, in which vanes which are perpendicular to the walls 1a are interposed between the vanes 10. The third Provisional Specification describes a modification of the form of Fig. 8 in which cylinders of different diameters and coaxial with the tubes 20, 21 are interposed between radial vanes.
