A fastener comprises two opposed strips, one of which is flexible and made of polythene or other plastic material having similar physical characteristics, the flexible strip having a plurality of integral transversely extending identical ribs, each rib being of substantially bulbous cross-section, the other strip having a plurality of integral equidistantly spaced transverse parts which under suitable pressure mate with the interstices separating the ribs, provision being made to prevent displacement of one strip relatively to the other in the direction normal to the direction in which they are mated or pulled apart. The fastener is used for connecting overlapping members such as strap ends, mouths of bags, edges of napkins and the like. As shown in Fig. 1, the two strips 1, 2 are each fixed to one of the members 4 to be connected. Each of the strips 1, 2 is made of the plastic material and each has a plurality of the transverse ribs 1a, 2a, which are separated by channels having the same cross-sectional shape as the ribs so that the ribs of each strip, 1, 2 can engage the channels of the other strip. A tab 3 is provided on one of the members 4 to enable the strips 1, 2 to be pulled apart. The strip 1 is slightly narrower than the strip 2 and the channels of the member 2 have webs 5 at each end to prevent the strips being disengaged by lateral sliding. In an alternative construction marginal ribs may be formed on each side of the member 2. Lateral disengagement can also be prevented by making the ribs of curved or chevron shape; in which case the webs 5 are omitted. In another construction, Fig. 6, the ribbed strip 1 is replaced by a slotted strip 14, the slots 13 of which engage the ribs 2a of the ribbed strip 2.
