Abstract

923,255. Sliding clasp fasteners. J. RUHRMANN. April 6, 1960, No. 39592/62. Divided out of 923,254. Class 44. A sliding clasp fastener comprises a pair of stringers each of which comprises an elongated flexible member which is substantially non- extensible and a plurality of coupling elements formed by a continuous filament, the elements having coupling portions, the coupling portions of one stringer being interengageable with the portions of the other stringer, the elongated flexible member being connected to said coupling elements for maintaining the spacing between said coupling portions thereof, portions of the filament of each stringer extending over the entire breadth of the stringer, a slider engaging the coupling elements being provided for coupling and uncoupling the same, the slider having at least one slider plate encompassing the coupled stringers over the whole breadth thereof. The sliding clasp fastener stringer of Fig. 1 comprises a filament structure 2 constituted by a continuous filament formed in a folded meander shape which is sewn to an edge of an article 5 by a seam 6. The spacing between successive coupling portions of the structure is maintained by an elongated non-extensible flexible member 7 of textile tape or cord to which the structure is attached by cementing, heat sealing, sewing or any other known way. A cover tape 8 is sewn to the edge of the article with the stringer. In a modified stringer the filament structure is in the form of a flattened helix having a generally rectangular crosssection. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) illustrate two consecutive steps of attaching a stringer of the type shown in Fig. 1 to an edge portion of an article to arrive at the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 in which the coupled stringers are completely covered by the edge portions 5, 5<SP>1</SP> of the article and in which the seams for attaching the stringers are not visible on the outer face of these edge portions. A slider 61, Fig. 5, comprises a plate 62 having along longitudinal extending edge portions thereof upwardly extending flanges 622 which are formed at their free edges with inwardly extending guide lips 621. The flanges 622 and lips 621 engage the edge portions 23 of the filament structure of the stringer 1, 1<SP>1</SP> which extend beyond the edges 51 of the bent-over edge portions 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. An elongated lug 63 extending upwardly from the plate 62 carries a pull tab 12. The continuous filament may be made of synthetic plastic material.
