Abstract
757,272. Thermionic cathode constructions. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 10, 1954 [Sept. 24, 1953], No. 23248/54. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group V] In a dispenser cathode, in which emissive material 11 is contained in a recess in a holder 5, which recess is closed by a porous sintered wall 10 of refractory metal powder, the holder itself is also of sintered metal powder, but impervious. The H-section holder 5, and closure 10, are pressed separately, and then sintered together after assembly, preferably in vacuum or a hydrogen atmosphere. The metal powder for forming the holder is of smaller grain size than that for the closure, is compacted more firmly, and sinters at a lower temperature, so that after firing, the holder is impervious, while the closure remains porous, and is frangible enough to be machined to size without filling up the pores. Molybdenum for the holder, and tungsten for the closure, are preferred materials The holder is pressed in a mould, Fig. 1 (not shown), the upper recess being tapered; the closure is similarly tapered, so that it fits exactly and flush. In the modification of Fig. 4 (not shown) the closure takes the form of filling the whole recess with the tungsten powder.
