Abstract

750,425. Rolling. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. July 5, 1954 [July 9, 1953], No. 19030/53. Class 83 (4). A roll changing device comprises a carrier 20, Fig. 1, supporting the roll assembly 17 and movable sideways with respect to the mill stand under the action of a double-acting piston and cylinder elements 23, 24 attached at preselected points along the track. The carrier 20 is slidable on rails 21 and has a notch 27 engaged by a hook 26 on the piston rod 25. The cylinder 23 is also slidable on the rails 21 and locked in position by double-acting pawls 30 pivoted on its sides and engaging notches 33 at various positions along the track. Flexible pipes 38, 39 connect the double-acting cylinder 23 to a reversing valve 44 supplied with fluid from a variable delivery pump. In operation the cylinder 23 is engaged in the first notch 33 and the roll assembly is moved through the distance of the piston stroke. The valve 44 is then reversed so that the cylinder 23 moves forward while the roll assembly remains stationary until the cylinder 23 engages the next notch 33. The roll assembly is then moved through another piston stroke and the operation is repeated until the rolls have moved the required distance. The return of changed rolls into the stand is similarly carried out in the reverse direction, stops 45, 46 limiting the movement in each direction. The valve 44 may be reversed automatically at predetermined points along the track as by electric limit switches.
