Abstract
1,101,347. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. 27 May, 1965 [15 June, 1964], No. 24779/64. Heading B3M. In a four- or two-high rolling mill, pressure blocks are movable into and out of a position under the chocks of the lowermost roll, and means are provided for raising the chocks away from the blocks, and for supporting the chocks when the blocks are removed. A fourhigh mill comprises work rolls 13, 14, and backup rolls 15, 16, the ends of which are supoprted in housings 11 by chocks 22, 17, 21, 26, which are slidable in windows 12. Each chock 21 is held in chock 17 by latches, wheels 20 are mounted on chock 17, and chock 22 is hooked to chock 17 at 24. Chock 26 has a rocker plate 28, which engages fillers 29 carried on a slide 40 actuated by a piston 44, Fig. 3, and below the platform is a pressure block 31. A back up roll changing sled 34 extends between the windows 12 and a pair of pistons 38 project through the sled to engage a projection 41 on chock 26, so as to raise the latter. Back-up roll 15 is balanced by a double-acting piston 48, which is also used for supporting chocks 22, 17, 21 and therefore the weight of rolls 13-15. To remove fillers 29 for effecting a changing of rolls 13, 14 and/or the replacement of different fillers, pistons 38 are actuated to lift chocks 26 and therefore roll 16. Piston 44 is operated to remove fillers 29 from under chock 26 to the position of Fig. 4 (not shown). Chock 26 is supported by sled 34, piston 48 is actuated to allow rolls 13-15 to be lowered to the position of Fig. 2, so that wheels 20 are at floor level. The rolls can be removed and replaced by a new set of rolls.
