Abstract
744,763. Reversing gearing. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. March 1, -1954-[pew. 2, 1952] No 30596/52 Class 80(2) Marine reversing gear between a power turbine and a propeller shaft comprises forward and reverse gear trains controlled by friction clutches or brakes which may be engaged simultaneously. Change of direction of drive is effected by first engaging the clutch or brake of the inoperative train, so bringing the turbine and shaft to rest, and then disengaging the previously-engaged clutch or brake. As shown in Fig. 2, the turbine shaft 11 carries 'pinions 26, 27 meshing directly and through an idler 21, respectively, with wheels 17, 22 on sleeves 18, 23 adapted to be connected to a shaft 30, connected to the propeller shaft 19 through reduction train 31 by friction clutches 28, 29. The reduction gearing may alternatively be arranged between the shaft 11 and the turbine 10. In the epicyclic arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the turbine shaft 11 is geared to a shaft 34 carrying a sun 35 meshing with stepped planets 36 in a carrier 37, the planets meshing also with a sun 40 on the propeller shaft 19 and with a sun 41 on' a sleeve 42, the carrier 37 and sleeve 42 being provided with brakes 43 and 44. Alternatively, the stepped planets may mesh with sun 35 and with two annuli, one of which latter is carried by the shaft 19 while the other annulus and the carried are provided with brakes.
