Abstract

784,120. Change-speed and differential gear. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Oct. 15, 1954 [Oct. 30, 1953], No. 30105/53. Class 80 (2). A driving arrangement for a tracklaying vehicle comprises a hydrokinetic drive unit 14 coaxial with the input shaft 11 and comprises separate bevel gears 24, 25 driving differential mechanism 72 and epicyclic changespeed gears on a cross-drive shaft 31. Spur gears 67 are driven by the runner 21 of the unit 14 through the differential mechanism. Three high-speed forward gear ratios are provided by brakes 55, 41, 51 on epicyclic gears, with a clutch 17 engaged so that the bevel gear 25 is driven by the casing of the unit 14 through an annular gear 18 and by the runner 21 through a sun-gear 19. Three low-speed forward gear ratios are provided by the brakes 55, 41, 51, with the clutch 17 disengaged and a brake 26 applied to the annulus 18. Two reverse gears are obtained with the clutch 17 disengaged and with brakes 26, 39 applied or with only a brake 84 on the cross-drive shaft 31 applied. Steering is effected by applying either of the brakes 68, controlling the respective spurwheel 67 and sun-gear 65.
