Abstract

1,015,596. Variable-speed gear. P. M. DE JULIAN. June 29, 1962 [July 29, 1961; April 30, 1962], No. 25156/62. Heading F2D. A continuously-variable-ratio gear comprises two simple trains of planetary gearing having two pairs of their gear elements connected together, each of the two pairs of elements being connected to the pump and turbine of an hydraulic torque converter. In one form, an input sun gear 11 drives through planet pinions 12 and a ring gear 13, comprising a first planetary train. A carrier 14 journals the planet pinion 12 and also journals further planet pinions 16, meshing the ring gear 13 and a second sun gear 15, the latter elements comprising a second planetary train. The two ring gears 13 of the planetary trains are fast with the pump 18 of an hydrodynamic torque converter, shown diagrammatically externally of the two planetary trains, but actually located spatially between them. The two sets of planet pinions 12, 16 on the common carrier 14 are connected with the torque converter turbine 19, and the sun gear 15 drives an output shaft 22. A one-way detent 23 stations the reactor 20 of the torque converter. In a modification, an input shaft 50, Fig. 2 (not shown), drives through a first planetary train having bevel planet pinions 52 on a carrier 54 geared through a countershaft train 58 to the turbine 62 of an hydrodynamic torque converter, the output sun gear 53 of the planetary train driving the input bevel sun gear 69 of a second planetary train, both of which sun gears are fast with the pump 63 of the torque converter. Planet pinions 71 of the second train are on a carrier 70 fast with the turbine 62 geared to the planet carrier of the first train. The second sun gear 72 of the second train drives an output shaft 73, and the reactor 64 of the torque converter can be stationed by a oneway brake 67.
