450,398. Acoustic attenuators. GRIFFITH, A. A., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Oct. 16, 1934, No. 29576. [Class 13] [See also Group XXVII] In exhaust or intake silencers having expansion chambers, a number of high - frequency acoustic filters are arranged in parallel between the engine and the expansion chamber, so as to attenuate a band of frequencies which coincide with the natural frequency of vibration of the shell of the expansion chamber. The Figure shows a pipe 1 leading from the engine into an expansion chamber 2 having an outlet at 3, the acoustic filters being formed by an intermediate pipe 4 and partitions 5 ... 8 with perforations as shown in the pipes 1 and 4. In a modification, the pipe 1 may be continuous through the expansion chamber, and a silencer so constructed may be used in series with a silencer as shown.
