Abstract
740,456. Cathode materials and processing. PATENT-TREUHAND-GES. FUR ELEKTRISCHE GLUHLAMPEN. Oct. 23, 1952 [Nov. 1, 1951], No. 26637/52. Class 39 (1). A cathode material consists of a partly reduced mixture of one mol. of alkaline earth oxide and one mol. of a cerium oxide. Barium cerate of perowskite form, preferably mixed with 1-10 per cent, e.g. 3 per cent, of a reducing alloy containing equal parts of aluminium and barium is heated in hydrogen. The cerate may be produced by heating barium carbonate and cerium oxide for half an hour at 1400 C. and the product is fired in hydrogen at 1000 C. The oxygen atom in the cerate may be partly replaced by fluorine; the cerate may be fired in hydrogen at 1350-1400 C. with a proportion which is in the range of one hundredth and one of cerium oxide and barium fluoride or of barium carbonate and cerium flouride to give a perowskite structure. The electron-emitting paste for a cold or thermionic cathode is produced by suspending the ground material in alcohol, acetone butylacetate to coat tungsten coils or it may be shaped into rods. A low-pressure lamp having an internal coating of fluorescent material, e.g. magnesium tungstate or zinc beryllium silicate is provided with hollow cylindrical electrodes of sheet iron or molybdenum or nickel coated internally with the emulsion or filled with compressed powder or a sintered pill of the material. The filling consists of argon and mercury at 4-8 microns. Dimension of the electrodes, current rating and cathode drop are specified. The cathode material 12, Fig. 3, may be fitted into a groovo of a cap 11 and held by a member 13.
