Abstract
739,968. Water-tube steam boilers. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. April 6, 1954 [April 6, 1953], No. 10063/54. Class 123 (2). A steam boiler, heated by a fluid, for example a liquified solid material such as molten salt, comprises a horizontal steam-and-water drum 10 supported from superjacent steel work, not shown, by means of straps 11, a plurality of downwardly-extending shells 14, 15 terminating in water drums 16, 17, a group of tubes 32 in each shell extending between lower and upper plates 31, 33 and connecting the drum 10 to the drums 16, 17, external downcomers 18 between said drum 10 and drums 16, 17, and inlets 19 and outlets 20 for the circulation of molten salt through the part of the shells 14, 15 defined by the plates 31, 33. The shells 14, 15 have corrugated joints 21 to permit expansion and contraction relative to the tubes 32; for the same reason the downcomers 18 have a sinuous configuration. The plates 31, 33 are welded respectively to the open upper ends of the drums 16, 17 and to the lower ends of extensions 12, 13 which are themselves welded to the bottom of the drum 10, and the ends of the shells 14, 15 are welded to the near sides of said plates. The parts of the tubes 32 opposite the salt inlets 19 are shielded from erosion by welded-on curved metal shields, and two horizontal protection baffles 34 for the plates 31, 33 are fitted, in non-fluidtight contact with the tubes 32, between the said plates and the salt outlet 20 and inlet 19. Molten salts from different sources may be supplied to each of the shells 14, 15; several different kinds of liquidheating material may also be employed in a single boiler.
