653,540. Heat exchangers; forced-flow steam boilers. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING-SUPERHEATER, Inc. June 29, 1948, No. 17428. Convention date, July 2, 1947. [Classes 64(iii) and 123(ii)] Heat exchange apparatus, such as a forced-circulation steam boiler, comprises an upright shell 1 which has an inlet 4 for heating gases in its upper head 2, an exhaust gas outlet 8 adjacent this head, and locates a gas conduit 5 which latter is sealed at its upper end to the inlet 4, extends downwardly to near the bottom head 3 of said shell, and houses the tubes of, for example, steam-generating units 9, 11, a superheater 10, and an economizer 12. The conduit 5, preferably of square cross-section, may be in several sections 16-19, one for each tube bank 9-12, which are connected together with the interposition of expansion joints 20 and are fitted along two opposed sides with tube sheets 21 provided with holes for receiving and supporting the-bends of the corresponding tube bank. The steam-generating and other units have associated supporting inlet and outlet headers 14, 15 which are closed at one end 23 and, at that end, engage brackets 25 within the shell 1, the other ends of the headers projecting through sealed holes 24 in the said shell. The boiler is completed by an upper steam-and-water drum, not shown, a circulating pump having its inlet coupled to downcomers depending from the latter and its discharge connected to the inlet headers 14 of the steam-generating units 9, 11, and the usual feed pump for supplying water to the economizer 12.
