Abstract

In producing nodular cast iron the magnesium bearing molten metal is treated during the casting process with a flux having the property of wetting magnesium oxide, e.g. borax, boric acid, fused borax, alkali metal fluoborates and mixtures containing a double chloride of an alkali metal and magnesium. The flux may be added to the molten metal in a ladle or to the casting mould and the metal may be protected from oxidizing gas prior to solidification.
