Abstract
In a method of introducing readily melting and readily boiling or oxidizable additives into molten metal flowing through a pouring gate into which the additive is introduced in the solid state, mechanically or by hand, through one or more lateral openings capable of being sealed off to the outside air, the pouring gate is so constructed and dimensioned as to produce a suction effect in the zone of introduction. The pouring gate is closed on all sides, disposed between a smelting furnace and a ladle, forehearth or mixer, and is preferably downwardly inclined. The lateral openings also may be downwardly inclined and are sealed off by sand or other neutral or insulating substance. The suction effect may be obtained by injector action i.e. the cross-section of the pouring gate may be widened at the point of introduction. The method is particularly applicable to the addition of magnesium or a magnesium alloy to molten iron to produce spheroidal graphite cast iron. Canadian Specification 511,717 is referred to.
