Abstract
A process of making spheroidal graphite cast iron comprises forming a bath of magnesium-containing cast iron in a vessel having a clean basic or neutral refractory lining, removing liquid slag from the metal surface, and heating the bath to raise the temperature of the metal to, or to maintain it at or near, the casting temperature. The vessel, which may be a ladle provided with an induction heating coil, may have a magnesite or chrome magnesite lining and may be cleaned by super-heating molten iron therein; slag may then be removed from the super-heated metal and magnesium added after the metal has cooled to casting temperature. The magnesium containing metal may be protected by a plate of graphite, with or without a coating of glaze, or by a layer of magnesium oxide. The molten metal may be held at the casting temperature until its magnesium content has fallen to from 0.02% to 0.01% before casting. Specifications 743,456, 752,976 and 765,423 are referred to.
