734,550. Friction clutch combinations. SINGER MANUFACTURING CO. June 18, 1953, [July 22, 1952], No. 16931/53. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups VII, XXXV and XXXVII] An electric motor and clutch unit as described in Specification 622,441 is modified by having a brake ring 10 which formerly was stationary, now mounted for rotation on a ball-bearing 11. The outer periphery of the brake ring is formed with teeth 12 which mesh with those of a pinion 13 carried by shaft 14 of an auxiliary electric motor 15. The output shaft 16<SP>1</SP> is coupled to the ring 10 by endwise actuation of the driven clutch element 9 responsive to operation of a treadle, so that the output shaft is driven at a low speed compared with that obtaining when the drive is through the main motor. When the motor 15 is first coupled to the machine it acts as a regenerative brake, and the machine is finally brought to rest in a predetermined position by dynamic braking of the motor 15 or by means of a solenoid-operated brake (see Group XXXVII).
