Abstract

1456534 Driving arrangements for dynamoelectric machines UNION SPECIAL CORP 8 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 05807/74 Heading H2A A drive system comprises two electric motors 55, 60 operating in tandem and arranged to drive an output shaft 20 through a clutch-brake mechanism 15 on appropriate operation of the latter, the rotor 58 of one motor being arranged to drive one member 61 of the other motor so that the other member 64 of the other motor may drive the output shaft through the clutch. The drive system provides an output speed higher than can be provided by one motor acting on its own and is suitable for use in sewing machines, a belt drive being taken from pulley 23 mounted on shaft 20. The two motors are squirrel cage induction motors, the rotor 58 of motor 55 and the stator 61 of motor 60 being mounted on hollow shaft 52. The external rotor 64 of motor 60 drives a shaft 47 carrying a flywheel 24. A clutch plate 25 normally engages a brake disc 36; operation of a lever 37 causes the plate 25 to engage flywheel 24. The stator 61 of motor 60 is supplied with three phase A.C. through brushgear 66. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) which avoids the use of brushgear, the stator (161) of the second motor is energized through a rotary transformer (172) between the two electric motors, the rotor of the transformer being mounted on the hollow shaft (152) carrying the rotor of the first motor and the stator of. the second motor.
