Abstract
734,319. Permanent magnet generators; supply systems for Vehicles. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. April 27, 1954 [April 29, 1953], No. 1.1807/53. Classes 35 and 38 (4). A rotary magnet generator for charging a battery e. through a rectifier f comprises a main generator winding a connecteddirectly to the rectifier and one or two additional windings c, b connected to a manually-operated switch d so that they may be connected in parallel with the main winding, disconnected altogether, or, short-circuited, so as to give three different charging rates. The system shown is suitable for the ignition of a multicylinder engine, e.g. a twin cylinder motorcycle engine, by means of a coil g and interrupter h. In addition, manually - operated coupled switches i, j are provided to switch the system off or provide ignition current direct from the generator. In the position shown, the rate of charge is controlled by the switch d and the ignition current is drawn from the battery, but when the battery is low, the switches i, j are moved to the positions shown dotted in which windings b, c, jointly supply current to the ignition coil direct, the battery being fed from winding a alone. Movement of switches i, j to the intermediate position interrupts the supply to the battery and ignition coil. A modification is described for single cylinder engines in which the connection n is taken to a point between the ignition coil and interrupter.
