733,430. Stuffing-box substitutes. UNITED STATES METALLIC PACKING CO., Ltd., and STEPHENS, J. April 20, 1953 [April 25, 1952], No. 10418/52. Class 122 (5). In a shaft sealing device in which a rotatable packing ring 7 is located between a fixed packing ring 3 and a rotatable clamping ring 11, the rotatable packing ring 7 is sealed to the shaft 1 by a resilient packing ring 15 located in an axially displaceable manner in an annular recess 8 in the rotatable packing ring and compressed against the clamping ring 11, by means such as springs 16 in the recess 8, the packing rings 3 and 7 and the shaft casing wall 2 all surrounding the shaft 1 with clearance so that the pressure in the casing enters the recess 8 and assists the springs 16 to compress the packing ring 15 and urge the rotatable packing ring 7 into facial sealing contact with the fixed packing ring 3. The springs 16 are located by pins 18 carried on a follower ring 17. 'To facilitate assembly, the rotatable packing ring 7 and the clamping ring 11 are formed in halves and, if desired, the fixed packing ring 3 and its retaining ring 5 may also be formed in halves. The clamping ring 11 is formed with, or has adjacent thereto, a ring 12 which enters the open end of the recess 8 with radial clearance between itself and the rotatable packing ring 7 and abuts the resilient packing ring 15. Oil is supplied to the contact faces 9, 10 through duct 42. The rotatable packing ring 7 may be positively driven from the clamping ring 11 by means such as pins on the one engaging recesses in the other. In a modification for use when the casing is under vacuum, the upper end of the recess 8 is arranged to be open to atmosphere. In a further modification for use when the casing is under either pressure or vacuum, two sealing devices are arranged in series, one on either side of a common clamping ring, all accommodated in a housing attached to the casing wall; the annular recess in one of the rotatable packing rings communicating with the interior of the casing and the recess in the other communicating with the atmosphere.
