Abstract

583,818. Oil seals. BELDAM, W. R., and BELDAM ASBESTOS CO., Ltd. Feb. 21, 1944, No. 3216. [Class 122 (v)] An oil seal comprising a packing ring 1 having a sealing lip 1a is initially of smaller external diameter than the stuffing box and is adapted to be compressed, e.g., by screws 7 engaging plates 5, 6, to expand the ring into sealing engagement with the box. The packing lip may be spring loaded and the plate 5 may be extended radially and clamped to the outer wall of the box. Several such packings may be mounted one behind the other. The ring may be clamped between rings 10, 11, Fig. 6, the latter being either screwed into the box or secured to the former by screws.
