Abstract

843,562. Stuffing-box substitutes. WALKER & CO. Ltd., J. Oct. 9, 1958 [Oct. 11, 1957], No. 31816/57. Class 122 (5). Component parts of a rubbing-collar type seal are mounted in a housing 1 in separately detachable sliding engagement with one or more splines 11 on the inside of the housing. A carbon ring 2 is sealed to a rotatable shaft 17 by an H- section packing ring 3 and adapted to be urged into facial sealing contact with a stationary ring (not shown) by springs 9 compressed between a header ring 4 and a retaining ring 7. Slots 12 in the rings 2, 3, 4 and 7 freely engage the spline rods 11, one end 13 of each rod being bent to engage a radial hole in the housing 1 and the other end engaging a recess in the housing end flange 6. The parts are located by a circlip 5. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the ring 7 is omitted, and the springs 9 are compressed between the ring 4 and an internal flange of the housing.
