Abstract

A mixture of di-esters or complex esters of dibasic acids having 8 to 14 carbon atoms in each acid molecule is prepared by sulphating oleic acid, hydrolysing the resultant sulphate to a mixture of hydroxy stearic acids, cleaving the mixed acids by nitric acid oxidation to form a mixture of dibasic acids and recovering and fully esterifying the mixed acids with an aliphatic alcohol containing 6 or more but preferably less than 21 carbon atoms or partially esterifying the mixed acids with such an alcohol to form a half-ester with which a glycol is fully esterified. In an example, oleic acid in hexane solution is sulphated with sulphuric acid at 0 DEG to -10 DEG C., the resulting sulphate is hydrolysed by boiling with water yielding a mixture of hydroxy stearic acids containing some esters which is saponified and distilled to remove liberated alcohol; the residue is acidified and the hydroxy stearic acids recovered therefrom; the mixed acids are then added to boiling nitric acid containing ammonium metavanadate as catalyst and the dibasic acids formed are recovered by boiling off the excess nitric acid and then fully esterified with iso-octyl alcohol. In forming complex esters there may be used as the glycol, ethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol or thiodiglycol. The esters and complex esters may be used as lubricants.ALSO:A lubricating composition comprises a mixture of di-esters or complex esters of dibasic acids, having 8 to 14 carbon atoms in each acid molecule, prepared by sulphating oleic acid, hydrolysing the resultant sulphate to a mixture of hydroxy stearic acids, cleaving the mixed acids by nitric acid oxidation to form a mixture of dibasic acids and recovering and fully esterifying the mixed acids with an aliphatic alcohol containing 6 or more but preferably less than 21 carbon atoms or partially esterifying the mixed acids with such an alcohol to form a half-ester with which a glycol is fully esterified.
