Abstract
The invention comprises 3-p-diphenylyl-pent-3-enoic acid and its salts and the preparation thereof by condensing ethyl diphenylyl ketone with a haloacetic ester under anhydrous conditions in the presence of a metal such as zinc or magnesium followed by hydrolysis and dehydration of the reaction product. The hydrolysis and dehydration may be carried out in two steps ; a first stage with mineral acid to decompose the reaction product to form an ester of 3-p-diphenylyl-3-hydroxy-valeric acid and a second stage with alkali to hydrolyse and dehydrate the said ester. In a modification of the said process sufficiently concentrated acid such as 50% sulphuric acid, is used to decompose and dehydrate the reaction product before alkaline hydrolysis.
