Abstract
1,185,209. Montan wax esters. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 18 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 57358/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Carbon paper waxes are obtained from crude montan wax by (i) saponifying at 90- 180‹ C. with 100-110% of the theoretical weight of alkali metal hydroxide required, as calculated from the saponiflcation number of the crude wax, (ii) acidifying with H 2 SO 4 below 90‹ C. to liberate the wax acids, and (iii) esterifying 30-90% of the acids at 100- 130‹ C. with aliphatic C 10 -C 20 monoalcohols and/or C 2 -C 6 diols. Optionally, the saponified fraction from (i) is extracted with gasolenes or acetone before (ii), and (iii) is followed by (iv) neutralization with Group I or II metal hydroxides. Ethylene glycol is the preferred esterifying agent.
