Abstract

730,189. Wrapping machines. ROSE BROS., (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. April 7, 1953 [May 1, 1952], No. 10966/52. Class 94 (1). In a wrapping-machine comprising an intermittently-rotatable mould wheel having a series of pockets, each constituted by a pair of jaws, to which articles are fed in succession by a reciprocating pusher and opposed transfer member, a wrapper being fed across the path of movement of each article so as to be gripped between the article and transfer member and folded into a U-shaped channel as it is pressed into the pocket, the articles are transferred in succession from the pockets of an intermittentlymovable feed conveyer into a stationary transfer pocket from which they are removed by the reciprocating pusher, and a pair of supports, movable in synchronism with the pusher, are provided to prevent crumpling of the projecting ends of the wrapper as it is formed into the U-shaped channel. Sweets 11, contained in pockets 12 of an intermittently-rotatable feed wheel 13 and supported on a platform 16, are moved in succession into a stationary pocket 14 by an oscillating pusher 15 which passes through a radial slot 17 in the platform and is formed with a base portion 28 for supporting each sweet during the transfer movement. The pocket 14 is supported by a pillar 18 and is provided with side walls 19 and an end wall 21 which positions the sweet for engagement by a reciprocating pusher 22 arranged to pass through an aperture 23 in the base of the pocket to transfer the sweet into the waiting pocket of a mould wheel 26. A slot 27 breaks into the aperture 23 to allow passage of the pusher 15. The pusher 22 is attached to a reciprocating cross-member 29 which carries a pair of laterallyspaced supports 31 which engage the ends of the wrapper 32 as the pusher moves upwardly. An upper transfer member 33 of known construction presses the wrapper on to the upper surface of the sweet and moves in synchronism with the pusher 22 so as to control the sweet and wrapper during their movement into the pocket. The pusher 15 is carried by a parallel motion linkage comprising pairs of arms 38, 39 connected at their lower ends by a pair of links 41, 42 interconnected by a bridge piece 40. The arms 39 are pivoted at 52 to a pair of fixed brackets 48 and the link 41 carries a roller 44 engaging a rotary cam 47 whereby the linkage is caused to rock about the axis 52 to move the pusher upwardly and downwardly. The arm 38 is coupled by a ball joint 53 to a housing 49 embracing an eccentric 51, whereby the arms are caused to oscillate about their pivots to move the pusher forwardly and rearwardly. The housing and eccentric are formed with spherical bearing surfaces. The arrangement is such that the pusher moves upwardly through the slot 17 into successive recesses 34 in the feed wheel communicating with the inner peripheries of the pockets 12, then radially outwardly and finally downwardly through the slot 27 and then rearwardly. The recesses are flared downwardly so that the pusher can commence its movement during the indexing of the wheel, and the upper end of the pusher 22 is slotted to clear the base portion 28 of the pusher 15 so that it may commence its upward stroke before or during the return movement of the latter. Specifications 730,190, [Group XXX], and 730,191, [Group XXIV], are referred to.
