Abstract

728,476. Reciprocating pumps. BREVETTI GAGGIA SOC. Feb. 25, 1953, No. 5275/53. Class 102 (1). [Also in Group VI] In a coffee making machine of the type in which a spring-loaded piston forces hot water through a charge of ground coffee, the piston is provided with a detent to hold it in its upper position against the pressure of the spring. The piston 4 is located within a cylinder 1 secured to a boiler by flange 2. The piston may be raised against a compression spring 13 by a rack and pinion actuated by a hand lever 7. This allows hot water to flow from conduit 3 through channel 15 in the piston and the non-return valve 18 on to the coffee powder held in a detachable percolator 14. The piston construction is disclosed in Specification 728,017. The notched disc 22 on the pinion shaft engages a pawl 25 when the piston is raised to hold it in this position. To'release the piston, it is lifted further so that a tongue 34 lifts the pawl clear. A tongue 35 returns the pawl when the piston has descended. The pawl is spring loaded by a ball, Fig. 2. (not shown), engaging a wedge shaped depression 28 in the rear face of the pawl.
