Abstract

728,047. Sifting apparatus. HARVENGT, E. July 6, 1951 [July 8, 1950], No. 16144/51. Class 117. In a sieve comprising several superimposed screens A-E of progressively decreasing mesh from top to bottom of the series, and constructed in reciprocating units 1, 4 of one or more screens, the material to be separated is first fed to an extension 8 of the uppermost screen A having a mesh smaller than that of the screen A and " through " material from it by-passed to a lower screen or screens D-E of the series, preferably in a direction opposite to that of travel of the material on the screens A-E, by an inclined plane 9b. The plate may be in two relatively sliding parts 9a, 9b (with the lower adjustable in inclination about a pivot 11), so that the quantity of fine material passing through the extension 8 may be variably apportioned between the upper screens B-C and lower screens D-E. Alternatively, the portion of the extension 8 adjacent the screen A (Fig. 4) may be in the form of longitudinal bars of spacing 16 equal to the mesh of the screen A and the upper sliding member 9a formed with longitudinal bars contacting the bars of extension 8 and of spacing equal to the mesh of extension 8, both spacing apertures being coincident, so that the effective areas of the screen A and extension 8 are relatively adjustable and fully utilized. Moreover, different portions of material may be separated out initially and by-passed to different lower screens,
