Abstract

727,917. Motor vehicle driving and steering arrangements. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Oct. 10, 1952 [Oct. 11, 1951], No. 25468/52. Classes 79(2) and 79(5). In a multi-axle driven motor vehicle a freewheel device is introduced into the drive of one axle and the drive of the wheels of such axle, as determined by the drive shafts and the diameters of the wheels thereof, is at a lower peripheral speed to that of the wheels of the other axles, so that normally the wheels of the other axles are positively driven in both directions of rotation and the wheels of the axle associated with the free-wheel device overrun their drive, but when the wheels of the other axles slip the wheels of the axle are positively driven through the free-wheel device. As shown the invention is applied to a vehicle having front wheels 10 and rear wheels 11, the wheels 10 being steered by a mechanism 22, 23, 24. The wheels 10, 11 are driven from an engine 12 through a change speed gear 13 and a transfer gear box 14. A differential gear 16 for the wheels 11 is connected to the gear box 14 by a shaft 15 and a differential gear 20 for the wheels 10 is connected to the gear box 14 by a shaft 19 which includes the free wheel device 18 having a driving outer race 25 and a driven inner race 26 so that the wheels 10 can overrun the engine. The wheels 10 may have a smaller diameter than the wheels 11 or alternatively they may have the same diameter and the shaft 19 connected to the shaft 15 through reduction gearing 14<SP>1</SP>.
