Abstract

In a process of manufacturing iron directly from ores using liquid, highly carburized iron as the reducing agent, as described in the parent Specification, a reverberatory furnace, preferably tiltable, is used in place of an electric furnace and the carbon monoxide formed by reduction of the ore is used, with other gases, for heating the charge. Coa dust may be blown on to the surface of the charge to assist the reduction and the carbon rod used to carburize the iron may be protected by a coating of refractory material.
