Abstract

A process for reducing iron oxide ores comprises mixing iron oxide ore, scrap iron, fluxing material, and solid carbonaceous material, heating the mixture to the sintering temperature to effect (1) reduction to metal of at least a part of the ore, (2) chemical combination of part of the unreduced oxide, fluxing material, and gangue, and (3) the production of a granular free flowing product, placing the granular product on the surface of a molten slag bath, maintaining the slag at a temperature high enough to provide all the heat required to reduce the ore, and then separating the molten metal from the slag. The granular product may be fed on to the molten slag bath in an electric furnace, the electrodes of which heat the slag by arc-resistance heating, and which are maintained between 1/2 inch above and 2 inch below the surface of the slag. The sintering may be performed in a rotary kiln and the granular product fed to the electric furnace without loss of heat. The amount of carbonaceous material may be that required to reduce the ore and produce a molten metal containing not more than 2 per cent carbon. All the carbonaceous material may be added with the sinter or part with the sinter and part directly to the electric furnace. The slag used may contain 0,7-1,5 molecules lime to 1 molecule silica.
