Abstract

A process of producing steel comprises blowing oxygen into a vessel having a refractory lining and initially a bath of liquid iron or steel to which additions of iron ore and a reducing material are made and inducing relative movement between the bath and those parts of the lining heated by combustion within the vessel. The vessel may be cylindrical, mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis, have both ends open or have an opening in one end only, and may be mounted with its longitudinal axis inclined 20-30 degrees to the horizontal. The reducing agent may be a carbonaceous material and may be added in excess of the reduction requirements, the excess burning to provide the necessary heat. The ore and carbonaceous material may be in pulverized form.
