Abstract
A method of making briquettes for use in iron production comprises mixing blast furnace dust and open hearth furnace dust to give a mixture having a carbon content between 5% and 15% by weight, moulding the mixture into briquettes, and firing the briquettes at 1000 DEG C. to 1250 DEG C. The briquettes may have a porosity of more than 20% and may be fired by updraught or downdraught. Lead and zinc, which are present in the dusts as impurities, are volatilized as metals and after contact with air, are recovered as oxides from the gases.
