Abstract
Fluid phenol-aldehyde compositions are mixed with not more than 20 per cent of a vegetable flour containing over 25 per cent of protein, e.g. soya bean flour, or pea and bean flours. The compositions are of the type requiring the addition of an acid or potentially acid substance to bring about setting, and are used as adhesives or for moulding. In an example, a viscous resin syrup produced from phenol, formaldehyde and sodium carbonate as catalyst, is mixed with 5 per cent soya flour, and, before use, with 5-10 per cent of a mineral or organic acid such as benzene sulphonic acid. Up to 10 per cent, e.g. 3-7 per cent of soya flour, is preferred. Resins from cresol or resorcinol are mentioned and resins of other types may be incorporated.
