988,840. Packaging-machines. FR. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK-A.G. Aug. 30, 1963 [Oct. 23, 1962], No. 34346/63. Heading B8C. A machine for the vacuum or special atmospheric packaging of articles, in particular block-shaped foodstuffs, comprises, Figs. 1, 4, a pocketed and intermittently rotatable conveyer wheel 14, a folding tube 15, 16 with associated pusher 10, a wrapping-web feed device and evacuating chambers 71, 72 mounted on a rotatable drum 70. Articles are brought by a horizontal conveyer 1 to a transfer device 5, 6 which transfers them to the folding tube 15, 16, the associated pusher 10 inserts the articles together with a wrapper into the pockets 13 of the conveyer wheel 14, open-ended packages are formed by a folding and sealing device 35, 36, 45 and the packages are evacuated or filled with a protective gas and then sealed in the chambers 71, 72. The transfer device comprises a star wheel 5 and a movable frame 6, the star wheel picking up each article G to deliver it to the frame, during which motion the article is rotated 90 degrees about a horizontal axis, and the frame moving horizontally to bring each article in line with the pusher 10. The wrapping-web feed device comprises vertically reciprocable grippers 30, 31 (Fig. 3, not shown) which draw the web, preferably of heat sealable material, from a roll V and the web is cut by knives 11, 12. The folding and sealing device comprises heatsealing jars 35, 36 and a rod 45 having a crossstrip 37 attached thereto which moves with the pusher 10 when an article G is inserted into a pocket 13, but remains adjacent the article when the pusher is withdrawn (Fig. 5, not shown) so that positive folding of the wrapper is effected before sealing takes place. The seam so formed is folded flat by a fixed plate 50 when the conveyer wheel 14 is rotated and the partially-wrapped article is brought to an end folding and sealing device comprising folders 52, 53 and heat sealing jaws 56, Fig. 7. The folders 52, mounted on leaf springs 54, are inserted into the open ends of the wrapper and horizontal movement of the folders 53 towards one another causes folders 52 also to approach one another. End seams as shown in Fig. 9 are formed, sealed as at S by jaws 56 to leave a central evacuation passage. After further rotation of wheel 14 packages delivered therefrom are moved on to a lifting plate 61, Fig. 1, by a pusher 60 and from the plate are dispatched in pairs on to a holder 69 associated with each evacuating chamber 71, 72. During rotation of the drum 70 the chambers are sealed and evacuated and the packages are themselves sealed by high-frequency heat sealing jaws 81, 82 (Figs. 10, 11, not shown) when emptied of air or charged with a suitable protective gas.
