Abstract

718,663. Purifying water. TORRICELLI, A. Aug. 20, 1952 [Aug. 31, 1951], No. 20849/52. Class 46 In a method for disinfecting water an ozonized gas is injected under pressure into water through an ozonation chamber in which the pressure is maintained hydraulically, non-dissolved gas is accumulated in the top portion of the ozonation chamber, forming a cushion of gas under pressure, and a fraction of the cushion of gas is released from the ozonation chamber upon its pressure exceeding a certain value depending on the pressure of the water in the ozonation chamber, until the balance of pressure is restored in the ozonation chamber so as to keep substantially constant the pressure of gas confined in the chamber. Water entering at E, Fig. 1, creates a head in an inlet pipe A and passes from its lower end over a partition p2 in a diffusion compartment B1 into which ozonized air is injected at d. The water containing ozone passes under a partition p1 into a compartment B2 where disinfection is completed and thence over a partition p3 into the lower end of an uptake pipe C which serves to provide a head for the gas M and constitutes a sealing device whereby the chamber B is hydraulically closed. The water begins discharging residual dissolved ozone at the top of the pipe C and the desaturation is assisted by baffles f in a downtake pipe D leading to a reservoir R, and by agitation caused by air entering the pipe D at k. Recovered ozonized air is forced by a pump P back into the incoming water at h. When the pressure of the ozonized air M exceeds a given value controlled by a valve V in a pipe a, it passes through the pipe a to be injected at b into the incoming water. In Fig. 2, not shown, a series of pairs of compartments B1, B2 is provided, a diffuser d being located in each compartment B1. In Fig. 3 an outlet pipe is dispensed with and the reservoir R forms also the disinfection compartment B2. In Fig. 4, not shown, the compartment B is of a height comparable to that of B1 in Fig. 3, and the diffuser d is located at the middle so that the region above it constitutes the diffusion compartment and that below it the disinfection compartment. The treated water passes from the bottom of the latter directly into a vertical pipe C which may be the conduit for the water supply. A reservoir may also be provided. The inlet pipe A is dispensed with, the water entering at the bottom to the left of a baffle similar to that shown in Fig. 3.
