Abstract

523,151. Treating sewage &c. GRIFFIN, J. D. Nov. 24, 1938, No. 34254. [Classes 46 and 111] Activated sludge and liquid to be purified are mixed together by the filtrate from an artificially aerated biological filter falling from above. Raw sewage is supplied through a pipe 2 to a tank 1 where it is mixed with activated sludge. Mixed sludge and sewage are withdrawn through cocks 5 by a pump 6 and delivered through a pipe 13 to a sprinkler 14 which distributes it over a filter 12: The filtrate falls on to 'the surface of the liquid in the tank 1. A fan 11 passes air, which may be mixed with gases to be purified, downward through the filter. There is a gas outlet 18, and an outlet 7 for purified sewage. Excess sludge is discharged through a pipe 16. Raw sewage may be fed to the top of 'the filter. Plant may comprise two or more units as described through which sewage and gases to be puirified may be passed. successively.
