Abstract
521,365. Treating sewage and foul gases; filters. GRIFFIN, J. D. Nov. 16, 1938, No. 33367. [Classes 46 and 111] [Also in Group VI] In apparatus for the biological purification of sewage, or for the purification of gas by means of air and a nutrient liquid, said apparatus comprising a number of closed chambers through which the fluid under treatment is passed successively, connections are provided so that air which has passed through the first chamber is passed on through any number of succeeding chambers in the same order as the sewage or nutrient liquid. In the case of -a trickling filter the air passes through the filter in the same direction as the liquid. Fig. 1 shows apparatus comprising two trickling filters in chambers 1, 1'. Liquid supplied by the distributer 3 to the first filter passes on to a settling-tank 10 and is delivered by a pump 11 to the second filter. Air is delivered by a fan 6 to the top of the first filter, passes on by a pipe 13 to the second filter and escapes to the atmosphere through a pipe 14. Fig. 2 shows closed communicating tanks 1, 2, for the activated sludge process of treatment. Sewage is supplied by a pipe 21 to the first chamber 'and passes on through apertures 22. Air is forced by a fan 23 through diffusers 25 into the first tank and passes from the top of the first tank by a pipe 26 which delivers it to diffusers in the second tank and so on. Modified apparatus is described in which the tanks are arranged one above another.
